West Cork Towns To Get Special Status In National Plan

I hugely welcome the decision to grant special status to our West Cork towns in the National Planning Framework 2020-2040.

In addition to this, the R586 Bandon - Bantry (via Dunmanway) road will be upgraded as part of the proposed plan. This is something I have been campaigning for over many years as West Cork is in need and deserving of a high-quality direct route for the transport of goods and people to and from the hub of Cork City and onwards to our national motorway network.

I am liaising with the Department of Transport since June 2018 to have the R586 Bandon to Bantry (via Enniskeane, Ballineen and Dunmanway) reclassified as a National route because this road serves as a crucial gateway to West Cork, providing access to the main towns of Dunmanway, Bantry and Castletownbere. This will greatly lend to potential further economic and tourism development along this important corridor.
